Chapter Fourteen
Alex was exceptionally grateful that the dining room was empty when she stepped into it the next morning. Now that it was daylight, her actions last night seemed much worse than they had when Jarett had been holding her in his arms. A dull heat suffused her face at the memory of it. She didn't know what was going to happen when she saw him again, what he would say, or how he would react, for he had been gone when she awoke.
If it hadn't been for the soreness between her legs, the lingering scent of him on her skin, and the blood she had found on her sheets, she would have been certain that last night was a very pleasant dream. At first, she had been mortified by the blood and uncertain of what to do with the ruined sheets. She had stripped them from the bed, buried them in her trunk until she could get rid of them, and retrieved a new set from the linen closet.
Now she was running late, which was something she never did. She didn't know how she would react when she saw Jarett again, but if she wasn't careful Hugh would know what had transpired, and that was something that couldn't happen.
Hurrying to the sideboard, she heaped a pile of eggs, bacon, and toast onto her plate. Her appetite was bigger this morning than usual. She was in the process of wolfing down her meal, eager to get to work, when Lysette came strolling in. Alex nearly choked on the bacon she had been shoving into her mouth as Lysette shot her a scolding look.
She forced herself to slow down. "You'll choke if you keep eating like that."
"Sorry Lysette," she mumbled around the bacon. She received another scolding glance for talking with her mouth full and swallowed heavily. "Where is everyone?"
"They were up with the sun, been out for hours now." Alex winced at the reprimand she heard in Lysette's words. "Your brother and that man went up to the north pasture." Alex took that man to be Jarett and she was briefly grateful that she wouldn't have to see him right away. Then, disappointment filled her. She was a little nervous to see him again, but she was also eager to. "Took Darren and Jesse with them."
Alex ignored Lysette's reproachful look as she forked the last of her eggs into her mouth. She walked across the room to drop a kiss on Lysette's round cheek. "What's got into you child?"
Alex shot a grin over her shoulder as she hurried from the room. Stepping onto the porch, she inhaled the fresh spring air and felt the sunlight flowing over her. There was a sense of happiness inside her that she'd thought forever destroyed by loss and betrayal. She knew that its reappearance had everything to do with Jarett.
Doubts flickered in, would he want to see her again, or what if what had happened last night meant nothing to him? The realization that she knew little about him slid through her like an insidious snake.
